All the dragonfly you see here are found at the Singapore Botanic Gardens. I took these photos this year near the Symphony Lake. To take a nice picture of dragonfly, you need a really bright sunny day when dragonflies are active. I discover through the many failed attempts that you really need a lot of sunlight to capture the beauty of the insect. Without bright sunlight, the picture turns out flat. I must say the male Crimson Dropwing, though easily found, is one of the hardest to capture a beautiful photo because of the pink body. I am still trying and will update this page in the future.
Crimson Dropwing (Trithemis aurora)
The Crimson Dropwing is a common dragonfly species that can be found in Singapore’s urban wetlands. It is often spotted perched on a shrub while basking in the sun. Males have red eyes, and an almost luminous pink thorax and abdomen. Females are golden yellow with black markings on the sides of their abdomen.

Common Amberwing
As its name suggests, the Common Amberwing has beautiful amber colored wings. This dragonfly is sun loving and can often be spotted dancing among aquatic plants.

Common Flangetail
This dragonfly has distinctive greenish yellow bands and spots on its thorax and long, slender abdomen. Its eyes are well-separated and grayish green in color. You can find it in wetland habitats with large expanses of open water.

Common Parasol

Scarlet Skimmer
The Scarlet Skimmer is one of the common dragonflies that can be found in the Gardens. Mature males are typically orangey red, while the females are more yellowish brown. Scarlet Skimmers often perch at the Marsh Garden (near Swan Lake).

Variegated Green Skimmer
The Variegated Green Skimmer is easily recognized by pale greenish color and white markings on the abdomen. This is also a common dragonfly in Singapore and also one of the more ferocious species. The females are of the same appearance as males. This dragonfly is a fast and strong flyer. It preys on other dragonflies.
